The Allen Lima Leadership Class of 2016 is supporting Lima Area Freedom School as its class project, and kicking things off with a donation night at Buffalo Wild Wings June 13.
Buffalo Wild Wings will donate 15 percent of food purchased from anyone who dines from 5 to 9 p.m. June 13 with the donation ticket.
This year's ALL class wanted to select as its project something that helped children in the community. In its first year, the Lima Area Freedom School was the perfect fit, ALL Executive Director Heather Rutz said.
Freedom School is a national project of the Children's Defense Fund. Lima Area Freedom School is operated locally by Shawnee United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Lima Black Ministerial Association. The six-week program is free to 50 area children from June 20 to July 29.
Freedom School provides summer enrichment that develops love of reading and a positive attitude toward learning. It uses a model curriculum around five components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
The class is raising funds to sponsor field trips, book giveaways and seed money for next year's school; class members will also support the program with volunteer hours.
